Railway nostalgia in the midst of the perfect alpine world

The Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway (DFB) steam railway operates a concessionary rail link on a stretch of almost 18 kilometres between Realp in the canton of Uri and Oberwald in the canton of Valais. The line runs through a largely untouched part of the Swiss Alps, some of which is otherwise difficult to access. It winds through wild gorges and along steep mountain slopes up to over 2000 metres above sea level.

On a metre-gauge rack-and-pinion line, some of the locomotives and carriages are over 100 years old. In recent years, these have been painstakingly restored and made roadworthy by volunteers. The railway is operated by independent bodies:

The Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway Association (VFB) with its approximately 7,500 members; the Furka-Bergstrecke Foundation (SFB) and the Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke AG (DFB AG) as the operating company. Although the sponsors have different functions, they pursue the common goal of securing the long-term existence of the Furka mountain line.

The Friends of the locomotives of the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway (DLF) are especially committed to the steam locomotives of our railway.

Currently, among others, more than 7'000 members of the association, about 10'000 shareholders, many donors and sponsors, about 800 volunteers for operation, maintenance and advertising at fairs as well as about 125 volunteers in the management of the DFB organisations are committed to the pass-crossing operation of the Furka Mountain Steam Railway. Individual key positions are filled by full-time or part-time employees.
